If you're strapped for cash and are desperate to get some funds in your hands to pay-off those overdue bills, you might want to check if your state has unclaimed cash and property belonging to you. People have been staying extra hours at work to get more funds in their pockets just to find-out to their amazement that they had unclaimed cash and property with the government all along.

The amount of unclaimed government cash spread-out among the 50 states is staggering. Experts estimate it to be almost $40 billion! In Alabama alone, it's over $373 million. Three counties in 'bama- Colbert, Lauderdale, Franklin and Lawrence already have $5.5 million between them. California has one of the biggest stashes of unclaimedcash- almost $6 billion and according to a recent report by the Union Tribune, around $600 million is added each year to the California state unclaimed fund!

Unclaimedmoney stays with the Treasury Department until their rightful owner who may have lost track of his assets like bank accounts or tax refunds comes to claim them. A fraction of this lost loot is successfully returned to its giddy owners, but most still go unclaimed. Reason for this is that most people don't even know they can claim unclaimed cash with the government.

It's a good idea to do an unclaimed money search and check the unclaimed property databases of every state you've lived in- specially if you've moved-around a lot. Mailed checks or gift certificates that have been 'returned to sender' are also turned-over to the state as unclaimed cash and property so it's quite possible that you may have a bunch piled-up after changing addresses frequently.
